Step 3 of 6
Check your progress
Setting a goal isn't enough. Check that you're moving in the right direction. Tracking helps you see what's working, spot where you're falling behind and stay motivated when you see how far you've come. Life won't always go to plan, and it's okay to adjust your goals along the way.
Your budget
Are you spending less than you make? Are you sticking to your plan?
Your savings
Are you saving regularly? Can you slowly save more?
Your safety net
Is your emergency fund growing? Is your insurance still enough?
Your investments
Do they still fit your goals? Are you okay with the ups and downs?
How often should you check?
- Every payday
- Move savings first, pay bills, check your spending so far
- Every month
- Compare your budget with actual spending; update your trackers
- Every 6 months
- Update your net worth; check your emergency fund target
- Every year and after big life events
- Review your goals, insurance coverage and investments
Use a notebook, a budgeting app or a spreadsheet. The important thing is to make it a habit.
- When will I review my money, and what will I use?
